Larus Park’s Crocksucker Creek

It’s funny because it almost sounds like a bad word, but Crocksucker Creek seems to be the real name of the creek through Larus Park. Does anyone have any background?

Bonus: Thomas Gupton should get a special achievement award for incorporating this into a middle school presentation the Virginia Junior Academy of Science.
