City moves to buy the proposed casino location for park and economic development

Oct 7, 2024 | by

From Jonathan Spiers at Richmond BizSense:

The city would pay property owner Philip Morris USA $5.5 million for the site, where it plans to create a new public park, extend Walmsley Boulevard from Commerce Road to Richmond Highway, and develop an economic development site “for commercial and civic growth with a workforce development component,” according to the ordinance.

The $5.5 million is part of $10 million that council set aside in this year’s budget specifically to advance economic development in South Richmond in the wake of the casino plan, President Kristen Nye said.

  1. I sure hope it includes something for the kids I know richmond doesn’t show much love or care for or children especially if you look at all the school and park facilities just walk in the bathroom says it all. No public access to play sports parks is sad. 22 million dollar facility in Henrico shows they understand ROI as high as taxes are it’s a shame!

  2. Now that the citizens of Richmond and surrounding areas are aware of the intentions to utilize city funds in this endeavor, now would be a great time to rally together, in order to help ensure that a facility will be built that would benefit as many citizens as possible.

  3. What Willie Edwards said! The area doesn’t need more overpriced rentals or shopping malls. How about walking/biking trails, community gardens, water play for kids. Affordable housing & groceries (not convenience markets or fast food).
