An honor for the Playground Lady

May 20, 2024 | by

Gilda Marie Hines, resident of Gordon Avenue and employee of the City of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities for 29 years, might have the 2200 block of Gordon Avenue named in her honor. Mrs.Hines worked at Oak Grove Playground, Blackwell Community Center, and Fonticello Park and was known as “the Playground Lady”.

City Council’s Land Use, Housing and Transportation Standing Committee meets tomorrow, May 21, and will take this up, among other things.

  1. I played at Oak Grove playground back in the late 60s and early 60s and did arts and crafts with Miss Hines & she always cut us in line
I also attended Blackwell school with some of her children. Miss Hines will be missed.
    RIParadise Mrs Hines

  2. I remember Ms. Hines at Blackwell, but I remember Ms. Pinkie being at Blackwell, Oak Grove and Hillside. We were just having a conversation about Ms. Pinkie at the Southside Reunion last year and how much we missed her. Love Ms.Hines, but Ms. Pinkie was the playground mom/lady to me.
