Philly Vegan launches gofundme to recoup cost of meals tax battle with the city

Philly Vegan has launched a gofundme campaign to recoup some of the cost of their meals tax battle with the city:

After spending almost 3 years fighting for justice the City of Richmond admitted that the error as their fault, but only after their error cost our business thousands of dollars in lawyers fees, missed opportunities/grants, time, and energy. After acknowledging how their error negatively impacted our business financially, representatives stated that they would work with us to help resolve that impact. It’s now 8 months later and all those false promises have turned into smoke. We used our voice to not only advocate for us, but other businesses which resulted in the City fixing many other businesses issues. As a result of us speaking out for others, the City of Richmond no longer is responsive to taking the steps necessary in correcting this financial hit that it cost our business.

Our business is none as “The Communities Restaurant.” At least once a month we host a Pay-What-You-Can day that allows customers to visit our restaurant and pay whatever they can afford. If they can’t afford to pay anything then it’s free. We explained to the City that our plan was to acquire a food trailer that will allow us to host mobile pay-what-you-cans around the City, and their error has prevented this. It is obvious that the City representatives do not care about what they’ve done, or the people in the Community that their mistakes are impacting, BUT we know that YOU, THE COMMUNITY DO CARE.

We are asking for whatever contribution you are able to make to aid our restaurant in moving forward. We have a few lenders willing to help, but because of the negative financial impact from the City’s mistake we haven’t been able to acquire all that is needed to proceed with spreading this Love from us to you all. No contribution is too small, or large, but ALL CONTRIBUTIONS ARE APPRECIATED. Thank you

  1. Good luck to you. This meals tax fiasco is inexcusable. But I have too much to pay in Real Estate tax to assist anyone else, especially a business, pay their taxes. I am on a fixed income and they don’t give me relief in RE taxes, it’s all insanity, IMO.
