Granite Festival is this Saturday

The first ever Granite Festival is this Saturday, September 14 from noon-7PM on the grounds of Huguenot High School.

From Amy Wentz:

Granite had its own stores, churches, clubs, gatherings, a post office and a train stop. A section of Forest Hill Road was formerly known as Granite Road. As families relocated to other areas of Richmond, the Powhite was constructed, and new commercial structures were erected, altering the landscape. Despite these transformations, the memory of Granite continues to endure in the hearts of all descendants of this historic place.

Since the late 1800s, Granite had a school where African American children from the community were educated. Annie Blackwell, the wife of James Heyward Blackwell (after whom Blackwell Elementary School and Historic Blackwell was named), led Granite Public School. Together with other teachers, they went on to create Gravel Hill Elementary School, which operated for an extended period.

Come, have fun and reconnect with your family. Open to ALL of Richmond to learn about this forgotten history. WE WILL NOT LET IT BE ERASED.
