Floyd’s family says no relation to George Floyd despite candidate’s claims

Samuel B. Parker at the Times-Dispatch is reporting that 6th District City Council Candidate Tavares Floyd’s sister and half-brother are saying that there is no relation to George Floyd and their family as the candidate has claimed in many places.

From the RTD:

The sister of Tavares Floyd — who is running for the 6th District City Council seat — says the candidate is not related to the late George Floyd, whose 2020 murder at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin sparked protests around the globe and led to sweeping social reforms

In addition, Sean McGoey at VPM is reporting that Floyd does not appear to be licensed to practice law anywhere, despite describing himself as an attorney:

The 6th District candidate has also been listed as a civil rights attorney in biography pages and blog posts from organizations he’s been involved with.

But Floyd — who is running against his former boss, Councilor Ellen Robertson — is seemingly not licensed to practice law in Virginia. Further investigation revealed Floyd is unlikely to be a licensed lawyer anywhere in the U.S.

This comes only days after reports that there are irregularities in Tavares Floyd’s campaign finance reporting that include donations from people who have never heard of Floyd or who have been dead for some time.
