Monday’s City Council meeting has been cancelled?
City Council’s Monday meeting, the last before the election and with dueling property tax proposals on the agenda, appears to have been cancelled.
The published agenda includes two ordinances, one sponsored by outgoing 4th District representative and Council President Kristen Nye that holds the tax rate at $1.20 for next year and another championed by Reva Trammell, Ellen Robertson, and Ann-Frances Lambert that would drop the rate to $1.16. The proposals were originally on the docket for October 28, with Council voting unanimously to delay the vote until the October 28 meeting.
The agenda also includes a pair of proposals by Mayor Levar Stoney, one for an income-based program that would provide up to $1,200 over six months for eligible homeowners and renters and another that would freeze tax bills for residents 65 years and older and for disabled persons.
Katherine Jordan’s newsletter had this to say:
Council’s Special Meeting on Monday at 6pm has been cancelled. This meeting was initially called to consider several pieces of legislation, including the RVA Stay tax relief proposal, and the competing pieces of real estate tax rate legislation. However, there are not a sufficient number of Councilors available for the meeting. This means that all of the tax rate and RVA Stay legislation will be forwarded for final consideration by Council to our November 12th meeting. Stay tuned for further updates in our next two newsletters.
