Abubaker, Lynch win uncontested races for City Council
After an energetic campaign in an uncontested race, Sarah Abubaker will be the next 4th District representative on City Council. A former president of the Westover Hills Neighborhood Association, Abubaker works as the Director of Strategic Communications at Collegiate. She is a graduate of James Madison University and the Thomas C. Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia, and has a Master of Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has worked with Richmond Performing Arts Alliance, WNRN Radio, Project Yoga Richmond, Art 180, and the Bon Air Juvenile Correction Center, and was recognized as one of Richmond’s Top 40 Under 40 by Style Weekly in 2017.
Also running unopposed, 5th District Council representative Stephanie Lynch will keep the seat for what will be her 2nd full term. Lynch was first elected to the position in a 2019 special election following the resignation of Parker Agelasto. She won an 8-way race with 27% of the vote; she was reelected in 2020’s regular election with 57% of the vote. Lynch has a bachelors degree from VCU in Psychology and Gender Studies with an African American Studies minor, and a Masters of Social Work, Social Work Administration and Policy Practice. She has worked for Virginia Department of Social Services and GoodNeighbor (one of Virginia’s largest providers of mental health and disability services).
