Work underway on Semmes/Forest Hill pedestrian safety project
The Semmes Avenue/Forest Hill Avenue/Dundee Avenue/W. 34th Street Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project is underway, with a temporary version of the new stoplight at 34th and Semmes Ave. and a slew of cones marking the outline of a new traffic pattern.
The old light at Dundee Ave. is offline and blinking, and Forest Hill has been converted to one-way just west of 34th Street.
The plan for the area includes a permanent stoplight at 34th, angled parking on the block of Forest Hill behind the businesses, and a reworking of the traffic flow at Dundee Ave. The bike lane will be extended to the 3400 block of Semmes, with that block being reduced to one lane of traffic. Also, a pedestrian crossing beacon is to be installed by Crossroads.
The work is scheduled to be completed by June 2025.
I like the changes being made, but the flashing red at the old intersection is a bit confusing. If the expectation is for traffic to stop, a temporary stop sign indicating that would go a long way. Some cars stop, others blow right through the intersection.
