The social media site Bluesky, a spin off from Twitter before it was sold in 2022, has seen explosive growth in recent weeks. Bluesky has quickly become a viable option looking for a way to keep up on local news and voices, without the baggage of what Twitter has become.

Other local media organizations have recently joined, including the Richmond Times-Dispatch, VPM, 12 On Your Side. Local government peeps Mayor-elect Danny Avula, 3rd District School Board member-elect Ali Faruk, and 4th District School Board member-elect Wesley Hedgepeth are here as well.

There are a few ways that we’ve discovered to find folks to follow. Users on Bluesky can create “Starter Packs” of different folks. Here is an “rva starter pack” if you’re looking for local voices. Here is a “Virginia (is for) Media (lovers)” starter pack. There are a tons of other starter packs across all sorts of topics. You can easily subscribe to any or all of the users in a starter pack.

Here is a feed of “Posts About RVA”. It pulls a constantly refreshing list of posts mentioning RVA or Richmond. You can follow the feed.

Finally, here is a media-heavy list of RVA accounts that is a good way to see what’s going on in the city and to help highlight local voices.

We’re looking especially to follow South Richmond voices. Give us a follow and let us know that you’re local!
