Jafari vs Sherman still a thing more than a month after the election

This past Thursday, former candidate for the 8th District School Board seat PH “Cruz” Sherman had a summons delivered to his home by the Sheriff’s Department, the latest in a legal fracas that started during the contest for the School Board seat. A month after the election, Sherman has to respond the newest paperwork and file a plea — and is bewildered that he is still having to deal with this “legal fiasco”.

To recap – in the weeks prior to the election, eventual winner E.J. “Emmett Jay” Jafari sought to have Shermam removed from the ballot due to alleged faulty paperwork. To appear on the ballot, candidates must complete the Certificate of Candidate Qualification. One of the questions asks the prospective candidate to provide the date of certificate restoring voting rights if they have ever been convicted of a crime that would preclude them from holding office. Sherman did not know the exact day only the month and year (May 1995), which was okayed by then Richmond Registrar Keith Balmer.

Jafari said that the form requires an exact date and that this action shows favoritism from Balmer to Sherman, and sought to disqualify Sherman and asked for the the now-recently-resigned “Richmond Registrar Keith Balmer to be stripped of his oversight powers for the November election.”

Sherman says that he contacted the Tennessee Elections Board, who had no record of him losing or regaining his rights, and that Chesterfield officials were also unable to locate any record towards providing a specific date. In addition, his attorneys from the mid-1990s have either died or are no longer in practice.

Sherman also says that he is contemplating legal action in response to allegations made by Jafari durring the campaign. He says that there were flyers accusing him of a violent criminal history (and on Jafari’s Facebook), but that he has “never been charged, arrested or incarcerated for any violent crime” and that the “fight is to clear my name and restore my reputation.”
