A year later Brady Square still sits half complete with contractors left unpaid

Sarah Vogelsong at The Richmonder has an update on the stalled Brady Square development off of Lynhaven:

But the project ran into trouble in late 2023, when contractors at the site said Brady stopped paying them for materials they had supplied and work they had done, leading many to walk off the job.

“I’ve got asphalt in the ground they haven’t paid for. I’ve got stone in the ground they haven’t paid for,” said Travis Whaley, the owner of Whaley Excavating, who said Dakota owes him roughly $800,000. “Somebody would lock me up if I didn’t pay them. …I don’t understand what’s going on.”

Samuel B. Parker at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has a look at the financials behind the project:

As for the $1.2 million in grant funds the city has already spent, Malone said it’s not a sunk cost because officials still expect to see the complex completed — though probably by a different developer.

“The project will get worked out,” he said. “Once the construction restarts, they’ll probably finish the next phase in a few weeks because the buildings are already up.”

A timeline for that resumption is not clear.
