“An Artist Mad and Rambling”

Following yesterday’s discovery that one of their murals had been painted over, Silly Genius of All City Art Club wrote a piece on Medium expressing the the frustration of the lack of support for the arts in Richmond:

But this is Richmond. A city that for as long as I can remember, has been a city that is for the arts. I moved here 20 years ago because of art. All my friends are here because of art. I’ve met more people than I count that are here specifically because of the culture of this city. And I hate to keep trotting it back out to do that lil dance but being named CNN’s #1 Town to Visit and USA Today’s #2 Best City for Street Art last year … well … I mean. It’s right there. We climbed the mountain. We ran the marathon. The creatives of the city have been screaming all along about how dope this city. About how much talent we have. How we deserve the spotlight. And now that we have it… why are we dealing with the same bullshit??? Why isn’t there any support for public art? Why aren’t there more checks and balances for developers and how they operate in the city? Why are there so many vacant buildings that we can’t use? Why don’t we have a nightlife? Why is it so hard to open a venue? Why is it so hard to keep a venue open once it’s there? The list of Why’s with no answers is longer than the James.
