Mayo Bridge replacement will include both bike lanes and a shared-use path

Following the September rollout of early looks at the thinking around a replacement for the Mayo Bridge that was criticized for not doing enough for pedestrians and cyclists, it seems that there has been a change of direction.

In an email today, Bike Walk RVA says that the new administration has put their weight behind both bike lanes AND a shared-use path on the new bridge:

Mayo Bridge update: we have spent a year working extremely closely with the Manchester Alliance, Shockoe Partnership, other nonprofit partners, and Richmond’s associated Departments to support a lane reduction on the forthcoming Mayo Bridge replacement. The big news is that the City is officially seeking a major expasion of protected bike and pedestrian space! We are extremely excited to report that Mayor Avula helped City Administration decide to sink their teeth into adding both bike lanes AND a shared-use path on the new bridge, and the narrower bridge will reduce costs in an effort to save our fundraising efforts for projects like the Fall Line and Bus Rapid Transit. Stay tuned for a blog post coming soon with more details. But thank you all for your active participation in meetings and surveys, because this success would not have been possible without you.

  1. They should just close the new bridge to cars. Leave the car lanes for the Pulse bus though.
